Dermal Fillers

Juvederm® Volbella, Vollure, Voluma, Ultra / UltraPlus, Restylane®, Restylane® Lyft, Silk, Refyne / Defyne, Revanesse®Versa™, and Radiesse®: Facial and hand fillers for the Havertown, Main Line, PA, Delaware Valley and greater Philadelphia Area

Wrinkles and folds are among the most obvious signs of aging. There are multiple reasons these unwanted lines may form on the face and elsewhere. A primary cause is the loss of collagen and other vital skin elements as time goes by. Mind Your Skin offers dermal fillers for Philadelphia and Havertown-area patients who want to address this gradual depletion. So by adding filler where it is best deployed, Norbertus Robben, MD, can restore a youthful smoothness, structure, and contour to the skin. Treatment sessions last a mere 20 to 30 minutes, but can yield results that last for up to a year and a half, depending on the area and the filler used.

Mind Your Skin draws from multiple communities (Havertown, Broomall, West Chester, Media and Springfield; the Main Line towns of Bryn Mawr, Ardmore, Wynnewood and Narberth). We carry two families of hyaluronic dermal fillers—Juvederm® and Restylane®—each with multiple sub-formulas for specific treatment areas and results. Dr. Robben brings years of experience and skill to each injection session, working to administer the ideal version and amount of dermal fillers in the targeted area to produce beautiful and natural-looking results.

What Are the Basics of Dermal Fillers?

First, it is important to understand that youthful skin gets its texture and resilience mainly from three molecules: collagen, fat, hyaluronic acid, and elastin. Collagen is what gives skin its strength, structure, and flexibility. Hyaluronic acid fills that collagen-built structure with moisture as it binds to water molecules. Elastin ensures that skin pulled out of shape will not stay stretched out, but will return to its resting state.

Young people have these three molecules in abundance in their skin, but ultraviolet radiation from the sun, environmental damage, and age-related degradation cause their levels to drop throughout a person’s 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond. Without sufficient amounts of these vital elements, skin loses volume and grows lax, leading to wrinkles and sagging. Because, in addition, underlying fat pads shrink and even the bony skeleton changes shape, this all leads to a deepening, downward turning, and descent of important features.

Dermal fillers counter that loss by replenishing water content and/or volume. Mind Your Skin’s dermal fillers are gels with a hyaluronic acid base, which means the formulas are specially made to bring more youthful levels of hydration back into the skin. Radiesse®, which has a calcium-based formula, is available as well.

What Are Various Dermal Fillers Used For?

Juvederm® XC (Extra Comfort)

Collagen and hyaluronic acid loss typically leads to the formation of nasolabial folds from nose to mouth, and “parentheses” that frame the mouth even on relatively young faces. Other moderate to severe lines that develop include marionette lines that form vertically between the mouth and chin. Juvederm® XC reduces the appearance of these lines. The latest addition to this family is Vollure®.

Juvederm Vollure® XC

Due to it’s ability to stretch and recoil with normal expression movement in the area, this dermal filler excels at addressing nasolabial folds, and in addition has a formulation that lasts longer than most hyaluronic acid fillers in the skin.

Juvederm® Ultra/UltraPlus XC

Thin lips may be due to genetics or a gradual reduction in volume over time as collagen breaks down faster than it is replaced. Patients who want a fuller, plumper look can choose the Ultra version of this dermal filler to add noticeable volume to their smile; UltraPlus is more resilient and better deployed at downturns, marionette’s lines and areas of volume loss.

Juvederm Volbella® XC

Sometimes lips need a more subtle boost, as opposed to an obvious increase in fullness. This dermal filler is formulated to provide just that, as well as to reduce the severity of vertical lip (“smoker’s”) lines, and other lines on the face that appear to be ‘etched-in’.

Juvederm Voluma® XC

Unique among the Juvederm® family of dermal fillers, Voluma® focuses on midfacial contours by adding volume—and thereby roundness—to the “apple” of the cheek, where a loss of collagen can lead to a flat or hollow look. Since volume loss in the midface also causes facial tissues to sag, this filler can serve to provide a “liquid facial lift”. Vycross® crosslinking technology extends longevity of this filler’s results (after full correction) up to 18 months.

Restylane® Dermal Fillers

This family includes Restylane® to reduce the appearance of general facial wrinkles and folds, Refyne to smooth out moderate laugh and smile lines, Defyne to address deep laugh and smile lines. Silk adds volume to the lips and treats wrinkles in the area around the mouth, and Lyft contours the midface and fills heavier wrinkles and folds. It can also be deployed to rejuvenate the back of hands.

Revanesse® Versa Dermal Filler

Revanesse® VersaTM is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that can be used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, including nasolabial folds.

Radiesse® Dermal Filler

This filler is used to  reduce the appearance of deeper facial wrinkles and folds, and for facial contouring, addressing volume or bony deficits. Radiesse® can be used to add volume to the back side of the hands where it creates a more youthful look pushing back against an excessively crêpey and or veiny appearance.

What is a Dermal Fillers Session Like?

Dr. Robben leads complimentary consultations so patients can explain the cosmetic issues they want addressed and work with him to decide on the ideal treatment. If dermal fillers are determined to be the best strategy, know that the actual injection session can be as brief as 15 to 20 minutes. Specifics depend on the dermal fillers being used and which area(s) of the face is/are being treated.

As with any injection, there will be a slight pinching sensation when dermal fillers are administered, followed by possible swelling, redness, discomfort, or bruising—all expected to be minimal. Any such side effects should fade within days, if not hours after a session.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Results Last?

Since all dermal fillers are different, there is no single answer to the question of how long dermal fillers results can be expected to last.

Generally, due to the volume-adding nature of dermal fillers, results are visible right away, though full integration takes a week or two, as the hydrating benefits of hyaluronic acid take hold.

Dermal fillers gradually dissipate, with some lasting six months, and others up to 18, before re-treatment becomes needed. Mind Your Skin offers a long-term Maintenance Program for patients who want to ensure their youthful look lasts as long as they want it to.

What Else is Available in the areas surrounding Havertown and the wider Philadelphia Area?

To address laxity, consider skin-tightening energy-based devices—in particular Profound and Titan®—and, for texture and tone, resurfacing and rejuvenation with ActiveFX. For periodic maintenance, consider the benefits of periodic microneedling, microdermabrasion, or chemical peels.

Dr. Robben makes a wide range of cosmetic treatments available at Mind Your Skin so that there can be a solution uniquely suited for each patient. The Practice is conveniently situated off of I-476 within minutes of multiple Main Line and Delaware Valley communities. Women and men with signs of aging due to facial muscle activity (as opposed to collagen and hyaluronic acid loss) require a different injectable treatment, known as a neuromodulator. The most popular is BOTOX®, with Dysport®, Jeuveau and Xeomin® as available alternatives to relax wrinkle-revealing muscles.

It is Dr. Robben’s mission to truly hear each patient’s aesthetic goals and match him or her to an ideal treatment strategy that fits within their budget.
